Experiential learning – how horses create embodied leadership
A Midlands’ Brain Friendly Learning Group session like never before..explore an “outside the box” way of learning…at a Warwickshire venue.
Led by Jude Jennison is the director of Leaders by Nature, an international speaker and author of the books Leadership beyond measure and Leading through uncertainty.
Companies are increasingly putting experiential learning at the heart of their people development strategy following McCauley and McCall’s 70:20:10 principles of leadership development, which consider that “70% of what leaders learn results from challenging experiences, 20% is learnt through relationships such as coaching or mentoring and only 10% through more formal coursework and training”.
Simply taking part in a leadership development programme does not guarantee that people will learn from the experience. An active process of reflection is required to convert the experience into knowledge that leads them to doing something differently.
The Heartmath Institute’s research indicated that in the presence of horses, we align the intellect with our emotions and gut instincts for a more holistic approach to leadership. Findings also showed people become more authentic, increase clarity and behave in a more congruent manner.
The current uncertainty and ambiguity in business requires leaders to be more agile and operate out of their comfort zone. Working with horses provides an experience for leaders to explore their default leadership behaviours out of the comfort zone and find new ways to lead. The feedback from horses is instant and non-judgemental.
Join Jude Jennison from Leaders by Nature at the next BFLG meeting to experience your personal embodied leadership and discover how learning occurs. During the session we will:
- Explore the existential psychology approach to uncertainty and understand why it generates strong emotional reactions.
- Experience working with a herd of horses to explore the embodied experience of uncertainty and our personal experience.
- Discover where we get derailed and learn how to use our strengths to overcome obstacles.

Praise for Jude’s recent book includes:
“Through her work with horses Jude has developed an intensely human capability: to help leaders recognize their style and improve its impact on others.”
Dave Ulrich, Global HR thought leader
“A thoroughly engaging, human and insightful book and definitely one for now!”
